Hard Work Pays Off

The best athletes in the world are not always the most talented, or the most athletic, but they will outwork everyone else. All professional athletes are different, there is no cookie cutter type of athlete. Some are tall and strong, others are short and quick, a few are more gifted naturally than others, or have a better understanding of the game and trust their instincts. But the best in the world, will work harder than the competition. Success is not gifted, it is earned, and the better the reward, the more work must go into it. Everyone wants to be the best, but few are willing to put in the work to be the best. Mike Trout, LeBron James, Tom Brady, are some of the best players ever in their sports, and it is not because they had the most God-given talent, but because they worked harder and pushed themselves more than anyone else.

Mike Trout is the best player in baseball by a wide margin, but he wasn’t the first pick of his draft, he wasn’t expected to be as good as he is. Trout was drafted 25th overall in 2009, meaning 24 teams thought that someone else was better than he was and they all passed on having him on their team. Now Mike is one of the greatest players of all-time and each of those teams definitely wishes they had drafted him. A similar story can be said about LeBron James who was taken first in is draft class, and while much more was expected of James, he still worked harder than anyone and exceeded the expectations placed on him by the league. Lastly the same can be said of Tom Brady who was the 199th player selected in his draft. Tom is the definition of an underdog story, someone who was drafted in the 6th round of the NFL draft that consists of only 7 rounds. Tom went on to be the greatest quarterback of all time, when no one expected him to last in the league. While others may be faster, stronger, or more athletic than you are, there is no reason to let others work harder than you do, and that is something that is important not only in sports but all of life as well.

What to Expect

The NFL season has passed and a new champion has been crowned in one major sport, but the year is still only beginning and the NBA playoffs and MLB regular season are rapidly approaching. As the sports year progresses we will be giving our updates and predictions as we get closer to the NBA playoffs. You can also look forward to our preseason predictions and power rankings as we anticipate opening day across the MLB. We will also be working on our way too early MLB playoff predictions and Award Winners, and the first of our NFL mock drafts will be posted very soon.

More than an Athlete

Kobe Bryant is one of the most dominant basketball players of all time, and as we all know he recently lost his life in a tragic helicopter crash that took the lives on nine people including Kobe and his daughter. Growing up outside of Los Angeles, Kobe was someone I looked up to a young age. I never got to watch Michael Jordan because I was too young, so to me Kobe was the greatest athlete I had ever seen. Bryant was the player of a generation taking home countless accolades in his storied 20-year career, he was a 5-time NBA Champion, MVP, two time finals MVP, 18-time all-star, 4-time all-star game MVP, he was named to the All-NBA team 15 times, the All-Defensive Team 12 times, two-time NBA scoring champion, Slam Dunk champion, and the all-time leading scorer for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Kobe modeled his game after the best, and by doing so he became a legend. While everyone imitates their heroes in some way, few have the dedication and passion to become heroes themselves. Jackie Macmullin wrote an amazing article on the accomplishments and life of Kobe Bryant and what made Kobe the legend he is. Kobe’s Mamba Mentality was what set him apart, a 20 year career filled with triumph for one of the best to bless the court, but his dedication to overcome anything and everything is why the entire world felt his loss. The Black Mamba was a different beast on the court, who else could suffer an achilles tendon tear in the middle of a game, stand up, nail a free throw, and walk off the court without showing the pain he was in. In the words of Kobe himself “mamba out” but he will live on forever.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
